Trump Meets With Colombian President Petro in Historic Meeting

US President Trump Meets with Colombian Leader Gustavo Petro at White House

Washington, DC - US President Donald Trump welcomed Colombian President Gustavo Petro to the White House on Tuesday for their first face-to-face meeting in Washington, DC. The two leaders described the meeting as productive, despite lingering tensions between them.

The agenda for the meeting included discussions on transnational drug trafficking and security in Latin America. During the meeting, both leaders acknowledged that they have different perspectives on these issues. Petro stated that he believes it is essential to approach agreements with a nuanced understanding of each other’s viewpoints.

Trump expressed his satisfaction with the meeting, calling it “terrific.” Petro also shared photos and messages exchanged between him and Trump after their meeting, including a commemorative photo and a signed copy of Trump’s book “The Art of the Deal.”

The two leaders have had a complex relationship since January 26, 2025, when they first began exchanging public statements on issues such as US deportation flights. Petro has criticized Trump for human rights violations and military actions in Venezuela, while Trump has accused Petro of being an “illegal drug leader.” Despite these tensions, the meeting marked a significant step forward in their relationship.

The two leaders have held several private meetings since January 7, when they first spoke by phone. Tuesday’s in-person meeting was the latest development in their efforts to improve communication and cooperation between the US and Colombia.
