Former Colorado Official Released from Prison Amid Pressure Campaign
Tina Peters, a former Colorado official convicted of allowing unauthorized access to state voting machines, has been released from prison after a pressure campaign by US President Donald Trump. Peters was sentenced to nine years in state prison for her role in the security breach.
Colorado’s Secretary of State Jena Griswold issued a statement expressing opposition to Peters’ release, stating that it sends a “dangerous message about accountability for those who would attack elections.” Griswold also noted that Peters has continued to spread election falsehoods and conspiracies since her release.
Peters was a county clerk for Mesa County, Colorado, at the time of the incident. She allowed an unauthorized member of the public to access local electronic voting systems and copy their hard drives. Peters is a Trump supporter and was part of an election denial movement that rejected Trump’s loss in the 2020 presidential race as fraudulent.
In November, the Trump administration issued a blanket pardon to those involved in 2020 election denial efforts. The following month, Trump granted a pardon to Peters specifically, despite her not being charged with any federal crime. Colorado Governor Jared Polis later granted Peters clemency, citing that her nine-year sentence was disproportionate for non-violent crimes.
Peters’ release has sparked controversy, with many critics pointing to her lack of remorse about her actions. After her release, Peters repeated unsubstantiated claims about election fraud on a podcast interview, sparking backlash from several Democratic candidates for governor.
