US President Donald Trump to Meet with Chinese Leader Amid Iran War Tensions
A visit by US President Donald Trump to Beijing is scheduled for this week, during which he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss various issues, including the ongoing war in Iran. The trip is expected to conclude on Friday.
According to White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly, the visit will focus on “rebalancing the relationship with China and prioritising reciprocity and fairness” as part of a reciprocal visit later this year. Kelly described the trip as having “tremendous symbolic significance”.
Trump’s visit comes amid efforts to contain the fallout from the war, both domestically and internationally. A senior administration official stated that Trump may use the opportunity to apply pressure on China regarding Iran in areas such as oil sales and potential dual-use military-civilian goods.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has accused China of supporting Iran, stating that 90% of their energy needs are met by Chinese purchases. In response, China has refused to recognize Washington’s unilateral sanctions on Iran’s oil sector.
The visit also coincides with disruptions in the global economy caused by the war, particularly affecting Asian states reliant on Middle Eastern imports. Business executives from companies such as Boeing and agricultural firms will accompany the US delegation.
No changes are expected regarding the US stance on Taiwan, a key point of contention between Washington and Beijing. China views Taiwan as part of its territory, while the US maintains deep security and economic commitments to the island.
