Trumps $400m White House Ballroom Project Temporarily Put on Hold by Judge

US District Judge Richard Leon has issued a preliminary injunction halting construction on a proposed $400m ballroom at the White House, pending approval from Congress. The National Trust for Historic Preservation had filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump, alleging that he exceeded his authority by demolishing the historic East Wing and commencing construction on the new building.
In his ruling, Judge Leon stated that the National Trust is likely to succeed in its claim, as no existing statute grants the President the authority to undertake this project. The judge emphasized that the President serves as the steward of the White House for future generations of First Families, but not as its owner.
The injunction does not affect construction necessary to ensure the safety and security of the White House. However, it suspends the $400m ballroom project until Congress provides statutory authorization. A 14-day pause has been granted to allow the Trump administration to appeal the ruling.
The Justice Department has filed an appeal with the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Carol Quillen, president and CEO of the National Trust, welcomed Judge Leon’s decision, describing it as a victory for the American people. The project remains on hold while the lawsuit continues.
