US President Donald Trump Posts Message of Support for Iran Protests
Washington D.C. - On Saturday, just under two weeks into the ongoing protests in Iran, President Trump posted a message of support on his social media platform, stating that “Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before.” The US President also offered to provide assistance to the Iranian people.
The message was accompanied by a statement from the White House, which read: “The United States stands ready to help.”
Trump’s offer of assistance has been met with skepticism due to the country’s history of involvement in foreign conflicts. In 2022, the US bombed Iran following Trump’s return to power, and he has maintained a sanctions regime against the Islamic Republic.
The sanctions have contributed to high inflation in Iran, which has triggered the current protests. The non-elite population has borne the brunt of this economic hardship.
In recent days, Trump’s rhetoric towards Iran has shifted from focusing on nuclear threats to warning of US intervention if protesters are violently killed. On Tuesday, he assured Iranian protesters that “help is on the way” without specifying what form it would take.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also weighed in, condemning the mass killings of innocent civilians and expressing support for the Iranian protesters’ struggle for freedom.
The Trump administration’s response to the protests has drawn comparisons to that of former US President George W. Bush, who was known for his “war on terror” policies and regime change tactics. The neo-conservative ideology, which emphasizes democracy promotion as a pretext for military intervention, remains a significant influence on US foreign policy under Trump.
The White House has not provided further details on the nature of the assistance that will be offered to Iran.
