British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper Visits Beijing Amid Efforts to Revive Relations
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has begun a three-day visit to China, marking the latest attempt by the UK government to strengthen ties with Beijing. The trip comes eight years after former Prime Minister Theresa May and her then-Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt made back-to-back visits to China in 2018.
Cooper’s visit is part of a broader effort by global leaders to engage with China, which has emerged as a major economic power amid heightened global instability. During her trip, Cooper has met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng and called for cooperation on global challenges such as conflicts in Iran and Ukraine and the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Cooper emphasized the importance of “candour and respect” in discussions between the two nations, stating that frank and constructive dialogue can help increase mutual understanding. She acknowledged areas of disagreement between London and Beijing but stressed the need for cooperation on shared global challenges.
Analysts note that the UK’s growing dependence on China for advanced goods and critical natural resources is a key factor driving the government’s efforts to improve relations. “The UK cannot afford a purely adversarial relationship with China,” said Jing Gu, director of the Centre for Rising Powers and Global Development at the Institute of Development Studies in the UK.
Cooper’s visit follows earlier diplomatic trips by former Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who met President Xi Jinping in January. These efforts aim to thaw a perceived “ice age” in relations between the two countries and lay the groundwork for deeper economic engagement.
