UK net migration drops by nearly half due to stricter immigration rules

Net Migration to UK Drops Sharply in 2025

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has reported that net migration to the United Kingdom fell to 171,000 in the 12 months ending December 2025, down from 331,000 a year earlier. This represents a significant decline, with long-term net migration now close to its level before the introduction of the new immigration system in 2021.

The ONS attributed the drop to policy changes implemented since 2024, including restrictions on international students bringing dependents and increased salary thresholds for skilled worker visas. The current government has also taken steps to tighten policies further, including ending overseas recruitment of care workers and raising the salary threshold for skilled worker visas again.

Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood welcomed the progress, stating that the government aims to restore order and control to its borders while still welcoming those who contribute to society. However, she noted that there is still work to be done.

The drop in net migration has been met with concern from some employers and economists, who have raised worries about labor shortages in sectors such as care and hospitality. The British Future think tank reported that most people believe the opposite of the sharp decline in net migration, according to its research.

Meanwhile, far-right activist Tommy Robinson drew tens of thousands of people to London for his “unite the kingdom” march, where Islamophobic and ethnonationalist hate flyers were reportedly distributed.
