Ukraines volunteer forces aid in rebuilding efforts after Russian destruction

Volunteers from Dobrobat, a Ukrainian volunteer group, arrive at damaged apartment building in eastern Kyiv.

On June 15, a missile attack by Russia on the city of Kyiv caused significant damage to several buildings, including an apartment complex where Dr. Mariya Prokopchuk resides. The explosion shattered hundreds of windows and sent debris into a nearby pond, startling local wildlife. Prokopchuk reported that she felt no fear during the attack but was concerned about potential looting.

Hours later, Dobrobat, Ukraine’s largest volunteer group, arrived at the scene to assist with repairs. Over 100 volunteers were present, equipped with tools and materials to clear rubble and install temporary window coverings made of honey-coloured board. The work was completed in a short period, providing Prokopchuk’s apartment with a safe and secure environment.

Dobrobat has over 55,000 volunteers who have already helped restore apartments and houses for more than 1 million Ukrainians. According to the group’s spokesman, Vadym Severyn, the organization prioritizes clearing damaged areas of unexploded mines and other hazards before dispatching volunteers. The group’s efforts are focused on providing assistance to those affected by the conflict.

Volunteers from various countries, including Ukraine, Sweden, Canada, China, Israel, and the Netherlands, have joined Dobrobat’s efforts. One volunteer, Lars Fersters, a 70-year-old retired blacksmith from Sweden, enlisted after learning about atrocities committed by Russian servicemen in occupied Ukrainian regions. Another volunteer, Jason Hercula, a 37-year-old hair stylist from North Carolina, traveled to Ukraine despite facing challenges, including selling his plasma to purchase a plane ticket.

Dobrobat provides both short-term and long-term retrofitting services, with the goal of supporting those affected by the conflict. The organization’s efforts have been recognized for their effectiveness in providing assistance to those in need.
