Ukrainian President Zelenskyy appoints Kyrylo Budanov as top military advisor

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Kyrylo Budanov as his new chief of staff, effective immediately. The appointment comes amid ongoing efforts between Ukraine and the United States to finalize a 20-point plan aimed at ending the conflict with Russia.

According to Zelenskyy, the Office of the President will focus on implementing key security measures, including the development of the Defence and Security Forces of Ukraine, as well as diplomatic negotiations. Budanov, who has been leading the Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) since August 2020, is expected to oversee these efforts.

Budanov’s appointment follows a series of high-profile operations against Russia, which have garnered significant attention in recent years. The 39-year-old intelligence chief has stated that he accepts the nomination and will continue to serve Ukraine.

Procedures for formally appointing Budanov as president’s chief of staff are currently underway, according to Zelenskyy’s adviser Dmytro Lytvyn. This marks a change from Andriy Yermak, who previously held the position but resigned in November following an investigation into corruption allegations.

Yermak was known for his close relationship with Zelenskyy and had been involved in US-backed peace talks as Kyiv’s lead negotiator. His resignation has sparked controversy over allegations of high-level graft and accusations of accumulating power.
