UN Reports 15,850 Fatalities in Ukraine Since Russia’s Invasion
The United Nations has confirmed that at least 15,850 people have lost their lives in Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022. According to the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, this number includes 791 children.
Kayoko Gotoh, Europe and Central Asia director of the DPPA, stated that the actual figures are likely significantly higher. The UN Security Council was briefed on Tuesday by Gotoh.
Peace talks between Ukraine and Russia have stalled, with US President Donald Trump attempting to mediate a ceasefire. However, fighting has resumed. On Tuesday, Russian attacks resulted in at least six fatalities.
In Chernihiv region’s Pryluky city, three people were killed, including a 15-year-old boy, in a Russian ballistic missile attack on Tuesday morning. In the Shostka district of Sumy region, two people were killed in an attack by Russian drones in Hlukhiv city. Another person was injured in a drone strike on a civilian car in Buryn city.
Russia’s Defence Ministry reported intercepting and destroying 70 Ukrainian drones over six hours between 05:00 GMT and 11:00 GMT on Tuesday. Multiple drones heading towards Moscow were shot down, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.
In the Belgorod region, two people were killed and six injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on Borisovka village. An industrial facility was hit by a drone in Yaroslavl region. On Tuesday evening, two men were injured in a Ukrainian attack on a gas station in Smotrova Buda village of Bryansk region’s Klintsovsky district.
The UN has not provided further information on the situation.
