US and Iran Discuss Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Tensions in Middle East

US-Iran Talks End Without Agreement

High-stakes negotiations between the United States and Iran have concluded without a deal. The talks, which took place in Islamabad, Pakistan, during a two-week ceasefire in their conflict, exposed deep divisions on key issues.

Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, stated that his delegation presented “forward-looking” initiatives during the talks but failed to gain the trust of the US delegation. In contrast, US Vice President JD Vance said that the lack of an agreement was a negative outcome for Iran, while expressing optimism about the prospects for the United States.

The negotiations, which were mediated by Pakistan, lasted over 21 hours and covered a range of topics, including Iran’s nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz. The de facto blockade of the waterway has caused significant disruptions to global energy supplies and led to market volatility.

During the talks, both sides presented their positions on key issues. Vance emphasized the US’s core demand for an affirmative commitment from Iran not to develop nuclear weapons. He stated that Washington had made its “red lines” clear and presented a “final and best offer”.

Iranian officials downplayed expectations and blamed the US for making unreasonable demands. They emphasized the importance of good faith, seriousness, and acceptance of legitimate rights and interests.

The talks will continue remotely, with both sides maintaining their positions on key issues. The main sticking points appear to be the Strait of Hormuz and gaps in Iran’s nuclear program.
