US Government Lifts Export Controls on Anthropic’s AI Models
The United States Department of Commerce has notified Anthropic, a US-based artificial intelligence firm, that its export controls have been lifted. As a result, Anthropic will begin restoring access to its most powerful AI models, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, starting tomorrow.
According to a statement posted on X, Anthropic expressed gratitude to its users for their patience and acknowledged the efforts of those who worked with the company to redeploy the models. In a letter to Anthropic, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that the company no longer requires an export licence due to its agreement to detect and address security risks associated with the models.
Anthropic had previously shut down access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 in response to a directive from the Trump administration, which restricted foreign nationals, including employees, from accessing the models. The company cited unspecified national security concerns but believed that officials were concerned about potential security vulnerabilities in Fable 5.
Following this development, Anthropic has been granted approval to provide the models to US organisations operating and defending critical infrastructure. The company is now working with the government to restore general access for the public.
