US and Iran to Sign Deal on Sunday, Details Remain Uncertain

US and Iran Negotiate Peace Deal Timeline

A potential peace deal between the US and Iran could be finalized as early as Sunday, according to US President Donald Trump. The agreement, known as a memorandum of understanding (MoU), would extend the current ceasefire for another 60 days.

Trump announced on Thursday that he had called off strikes on Iran due to the close proximity of the deal. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated the next day that the MoU with the US was “never been closer”. Trump later shared Araghchi’s post on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Iranian state media reported details of a document with the US, which included Lebanon in the agreement. Trump had complained about leaked terms being different from those agreed upon in writing and warned Iranian leaders to “get their act together, fast”.

On Saturday, Trump announced that a deal with Iran was scheduled to be signed on Sunday, with the Strait of Hormuz set to be opened to all. However, Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei disputed this timeline, stating that the MoU would not be signed on Sunday but could happen in the “coming days”.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the finalization of the US-Iran agreement was expected within 24 hours, with an electronic signing of the peace deal to follow. Al Jazeera’s Mohamed Vall reported from Tehran that there is a level of ambiguity surrounding the signing process, including uncertainty about whether it will be an electronic or in-person signing.

The Islamabad memorandum, being pursued by Pakistan, focuses on ending the war and does not include discussions on the nuclear issue at this stage. The US-Iran agreement includes provisions for Lebanon, where Israel is conducting air strikes and a ground invasion in the south.
