US and Israeli Forces Launch Attacks on Iran Amid Ongoing Nuclear Talks
A joint operation by US and Israeli forces has targeted Iranian officials, missile storage and launching sites, and nuclear facilities. The attacks come amid ongoing negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program in Geneva.
According to reports, the truce that ended a 12-day assault on Iran in June last year was declared effective at the time. However, nearly nine months later, Iran is facing another assault. Iranian officials have stated that the attacks targeted various facilities, including the Ministry of Intelligence and the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran.
Iran has responded to the attacks by targeting Israeli military bases and US installations across the Gulf region, including in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates.
Negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program are ongoing. Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Albusaidi announced that “significant progress” had been achieved during a recent round of talks. Iranian officials have agreed to give up their stockpile of enriched material and allow for full verification by the IAEA.
The attacks on Saturday were reportedly aimed at regime change in Tehran. US and Israeli officials have stated that they are seeking to dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities. The situation has raised concerns about regional stability.
In 2015, a nuclear deal was reached between Iran and Western allies, imposing curbs on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for easing of sanctions. However, the agreement was withdrawn by the US in 2018, leading to reimposed sanctions on Tehran. Netanyahu had long advocated for preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
The situation has been further complicated by ongoing conflict in Gaza between Israel and Palestinians. The US has amassed its largest military arsenal in the region since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
