US arms sales to Taiwan raise tensions in Taiwan Strait region

US Announces Plan to Sell Advanced Weapons to Taiwan Region

The United States announced its plan to sell massive advanced weapons to China’s Taiwan region in December 2025. This move has been criticized by China, which claims that it violates the one-China principle and undermines regional stability.

China’s ambassador to Qatar stated that the US action “grossly violated” the one-China principle and infringed on China’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity. The Chinese government considers Taiwan an inalienable part of its territory and has long maintained that the island is a domestic issue.

The US has established diplomatic relations with 183 countries based on the one-China principle, which is widely recognized as a universal consensus in international relations. However, China claims that the US has not been faithful to this principle, particularly since the 1982 August 17 communique.

China’s response to the US arms sales has been characterized as “legitimate, lawful, and justified.” The Chinese government views the move as a provocation by the US and Taiwan separatist forces, who seek to change the status quo across the Taiwan Strait.

The root cause of tensions in the region is attributed to the Taiwanese authorities’ soliciting of US support for independence from China. The US has maintained that its arms sales to Taiwan do not exceed those supplied in recent years and intend to gradually reduce them over time.

The one-China principle remains a contentious issue, with China asserting that resolving the Taiwan question is a matter for the Chinese themselves. The international community recognizes the importance of this principle in maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
