US Democrats face early challenge from anti-war candidates amid Iran tensions

US Democrats Launch Progressive Campaigns Ahead of Primary Elections

Two Democratic candidates, Nida Allam and Kat Abughazaleh, are set to compete in early primary races for US congressional seats. Both candidates have launched progressive campaigns focused on abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), resetting US policy towards Israel, and prioritizing workers’ rights.

Allam, a 32-year-old candidate from North Carolina, is running against Representative Valerie Foushee in the state’s fourth congressional district. Her campaign emphasizes the need for “unapologetic” voices within the party, citing her own experiences as a Muslim woman elected to public office. Allam has vowed to take on the challenges facing the working class and promote worker-first policies.

Abughazaleh, a 26-year-old candidate from Illinois, is one of three top contenders in the March 17 primary for the northern Chicago suburbs district. Her campaign has gained attention for its straightforward approach, with Abughazaleh stating that she will not focus group test her views or statements. The enthusiasm surrounding candidates like Allam and Abughazaleh follows a 2024 election cycle marked by a shift in the party’s leftward flank.

Other progressive candidates, including Junaid Ahmed in Illinois and Frederick Douglass Haynes III in Texas, are also set to compete in early primaries. Their success will be closely watched as the November midterm elections approach, which will determine control of the House of Representatives and Senate.
