US Hormuz Blockade Could Have Significant Impact on Iranian Economy

US Naval Blockade Takes Effect on Iran’s Oil Exports

A naval blockade imposed by the United States has come into effect, restricting Iranian oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz. The blockade began at 14:00 GMT on Monday, as part of a broader effort to pressure Iran into accepting terms for an end to its war with the US and other countries.

Iran’s armed forces have described the blockade as “an illegal act” that “amounts to piracy.” However, analysts say that the blockade could inflict significant damage on Iran’s economy. The country primarily exports oil and gas through its ports, and a disruption to these shipments could have far-reaching consequences.

According to data from trade intelligence firm Kpler, Iran exported 1.84 million barrels per day of crude oil in March and has shipped 1.71 million barrels per day so far in April. This represents an increase in exports compared to the same period last year. The price of Iranian oil has also remained high, with prices surpassing $100 a barrel on many days.

The blockade is expected to impact Iran’s ability to export oil, as well as other goods such as petrochemicals and agricultural products. According to maritime intelligence agency Windward, there are currently approximately 157.7 million barrels of Iranian oil at sea, with much of it destined for China.

Experts warn that the blockade could have significant consequences for Iran’s economy, despite the country’s existing reserves of crude oil. Mohamad Elmasry, a professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, noted that Iran would not be able to export oil at the same level as before the war. Frederic Schneider, a nonresident senior fellow at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs, agreed that the blockade would likely have a significant impact on Iran’s oil revenues.

The blockade is part of a broader effort by the US to pressure Iran into accepting its terms for an end to their conflict. The exact impact of the blockade on Iran’s economy and trade will depend on various factors, including the effectiveness of the blockade and any potential responses from Iran.
