US Imposes 25% Tariff on Iranian Goods Exported to Trading Partners Worldwide

US President Announces 25 Percent Tariff on Countries Doing Business with Iran

United States President Donald Trump has announced a new tariff policy, stating that any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will be subject to a 25 percent tariff on all trade with the United States. The announcement was made on Monday, and no official documentation or legal authority for the policy were provided by the White House.

The policy aims to increase pressure on Iran’s government, which is facing its largest protests in decades. Years of Western sanctions have significantly impacted Iran’s economy, leading to high inflation, unemployment, and currency devaluation. The country’s main source of revenue comes from exports to several countries, including China, Turkey, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and India.

China, which buys 80 percent of Iran’s oil, is expected to be significantly affected by the new tariff. According to UN Comtrade data, bilateral trade between China and Iran was over $13 billion in 2024, with much of it taking place through unofficial channels due to sanctions. World Bank data from 2022 suggested that overall trade volume between China and Iran was worth $37 billion.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned that his country is prepared for war if the US wants to “test” its military capabilities. The US president’s threat comes after years of tensions with Iran, including threats of military action. Trump’s announcement has sparked concerns about the potential impact on international trade and diplomatic relations.

The Chinese embassy in Washington has condemned the policy, stating that Beijing will take “all necessary measures” to defend its interests.
