US Imposes New Sanctions on Cuba, Labelled as Collective Punishment by Havana

US Imposes New Sanctions on Cuba, Cuban Government Responds with Rejection

The United States government has issued a new executive order expanding sanctions on the Cuban government, targeting individuals and groups that support the country’s security forces and those involved in corruption or human rights abuses. The move is part of an effort to increase pressure on Havana following recent events.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez has responded to the new sanctions, calling them “unilateral coercive measures” intended to impose collective punishment on the Cuban people. He stated that these measures are extraterritorial in nature and violate the United Nations Charter.

The White House has claimed that Cuba serves as a safe haven for transnational terrorist groups, including Hezbollah. However, no evidence has been provided to support this assertion.

The US government has previously imposed economic pressure on Cuba, including tariffs and fuel restrictions, which have had a significant impact on the country’s economy. The Cuban government has struggled with frequent power blackouts due to a severe fuel shortage.

In response to the new sanctions, the US Senate recently blocked a resolution aimed at preventing military action against Cuba without congressional approval.
