US Lawmakers Show No Action Amid High Disapproval Over Iran War Plans

US Lawmakers Show Little Appetite for War Powers Resolution Amid Ongoing Conflict with Iran

A recent series of polls has shown widespread public disapproval of the ongoing war in the Middle East and rising petrol prices. However, lawmakers have remained largely unchanged in their stance on the conflict, despite the growing discontent among the public.

The US Senate recently failed to pass a War Powers resolution aimed at curbing President Donald Trump’s ability to unilaterally prosecute the war, which began with US and Israeli strikes on February 28. The vote fell short of the required majority, with senators voting along party lines. Democrats have promised to hold weekly votes to force the issue, while Republicans have largely supported the president’s actions.

Despite evidence that Democrats in the House of Representatives have the votes to pass their own War Powers resolution, party leadership has reportedly backed away from holding a vote. This decision may be driven by concerns about the potential political fallout if they were to take a strong stance on the issue.

The Trump administration has continued to prosecute the war, citing the degradation of Iran’s military capabilities and the assassination of top officials as key victories. However, observers have warned that the conflict appears to have entered a phase of attrition that strategically favours Iran.

Polls continue to show widespread disapproval of the war, with 61% of respondents expressing disapproval compared to 35% in favor. President Trump’s overall approval rating has slumped to 36%, the lowest since he took office. The Pentagon has deployed additional US troops to the region, further raising concerns about a potential ground invasion.

Republican lawmakers have largely aligned themselves with Trump’s position on the conflict, with many top members cheering the US military effort and supporting Trump’s claims that the conflict will be a short-term affair. However, some lawmakers, such as Rand Paul, have expressed reservations about the war. The outcome of the conflict remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: public opinion continues to shift against the war, and lawmakers must navigate this changing landscape in the coming weeks.
