US Military Confirms Use of Artificial Intelligence in Iran Conflict
The US military has confirmed the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in its operations against Iran, with Admiral Brad Cooper stating that AI is helping to process vast amounts of data. According to Cooper, the war fighters are utilizing advanced AI systems to sift through large datasets quickly, allowing leaders to make informed decisions faster than their adversaries.
The confirmation comes as calls for an independent investigation into the bombing of a school in southern Iran have grown louder. The US-Israeli campaign has resulted in over 1,250 civilian casualties since its inception on February 28. Humanitarian organizations report that nearly 20,000 civilian buildings and 77 healthcare facilities have been damaged.
The use of AI in military operations has raised concerns among human rights experts. Reports have confirmed that Israel relied heavily on AI during its conflict with Gaza, which has resulted in over 72,000 Palestinian deaths since October 2023. The Iranian Red Crescent Society has also reported damage to oil depots, street markets, sports venues, schools, and a water desalination plant.
The Pentagon has been seeking greater access to technological tools for military use. A public dispute with tech firm Anthropic has centered on the company’s AI models not being used for fully autonomous weapons and mass surveillance. The Trump administration had previously blacklisted Anthropic as a “supply chain risk”, effectively banning it from doing business with government agencies.
