US President Donald Trump Comments on Venezuela, Colombia, and Cuba
President Trump made comments on Sunday regarding Venezuela, Colombia, and Cuba during a press conference on Air Force One. He stated that Venezuela is “very sick” and expressed concerns about the country’s leadership.
Regarding Colombia, Trump mentioned that the country’s government is led by a “sick man” who is involved in cocaine trafficking. When asked if he was referring to an operation by the US on Colombia, Trump replied that it “sounds good” to him.
Trump also discussed Cuba, stating that the country appears to be ready to fall due to its economic situation and lack of income from Venezuela’s oil exports. He noted that Cuba has a large number of Cuban Americans who may be pleased with any developments in the country.
The comments come after US forces abducted and detained Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife on Saturday. They are scheduled to appear in court on Monday on drug-related charges in New York.
Trump reiterated that the US is “in charge” of Venezuela, despite the appointment of Vice President Delcy Rodriguez as interim leader by the country’s Supreme Court. He also threatened to send the US military back to Venezuela if it does not comply with US demands.
The comments reflect Trump’s long-standing ambitions to expand US influence in the Western Hemisphere and revive the Monroe Doctrine, a 19th-century doctrine that asserts Latin America falls under US sphere of influence.
