US President Trumps Spheres of Influence proposal sparks debate in China

US Special Forces Abduct Venezuelan President Maduro, Raising Questions About China’s Investment in Venezuela

Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro met with China’s special envoy on Friday, just hours before US special forces abducted him. The meeting aimed to reaffirm the strategic relationship between the two nations. However, the incident has raised concerns about China’s investment in Venezuela and its understanding of US foreign policy under Trump.

The US has invoked the Monroe Doctrine, a 19th-century principle that emphasizes the need for Western Hemisphere countries to remain free from hostile foreign influence. The doctrine was recently revived by President Donald Trump as part of his national security strategy. According to reports, the Trump administration is demanding that Venezuela cut ties with China, Iran, Russia, and Cuba before resuming oil production.

China has pledged billions of dollars in investment to Venezuela, but the US action may impact these plans. Analysts say the incident could also provide an opportunity for China to assert its dominance in the region, including on its claim to self-governing Taiwan.

The “Trump Corollary” to the Monroe Doctrine emphasizes the need to counter China’s presence in the Western Hemisphere. The White House has declined to confirm or deny reports that the Trump administration is demanding Venezuela cut ties with these countries before resuming oil production.

China has condemned Maduro’s abduction by US special forces as a violation of international law and urged Washington to stop toppling the government of Venezuela. Analysts say this incident may reinforce Chinese perceptions that the US would find it harder to oppose similar logic in East Asia, even if the Taiwan case is more sensitive.

The US has pledged to help Taiwan defend itself under the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act and the 1982 Six Assurances. China regards Taiwan as an “internal” matter and has pledged to annex it by peace or force if necessary. The incident may provide another way for Beijing to discuss Taiwan on the world stage, according to analysts.

The US action in Venezuela has raised questions about the future of Chinese investment in the country and its understanding of US foreign policy under Trump.
