US Sees Rise in Islamophobic Social Media Activity Amidst Tensions with Iran

US Study Reveals Surge in Islamophobic Posts on Social Media Platform X

A recent study by the US Center for the Study of Organized Hate (CSOH) has found that more than 25,300 Islamophobic posts were made on social media platform X since the war with Iran began. The study, which analyzed original posts, quotes, and replies containing Islamophobic content from January 1 to Thursday, also found that such posts had been present on the platform before the war.

The dataset examined a total of 279,000 mentions of Islamophobic content, including reposts, which showed a significant increase in posts after February 28. The CSOH reported that users employed dehumanizing language when referring to Muslims, using terms such as “pests,” “rats,” and “parasites.”

The study also found that some military commanders had framed the war with Iran as part of God’s divine plan, sparking complaints from service members who felt this framing was Islamophobic. In a speech on March 2, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made comments that were criticized for being Islamophobic.

According to the CSOH, posts that crossed the line from hatred into explicit incitement to violence and those directly calling for the extermination of Muslims were also prevalent. Some of these posts framed the elimination of Muslims as an act of self-defense or civilizational survival, lending a veneer of patriotic duty to genocidal rhetoric.

The CSOH noted that this content functions as a call to action directed at a community already experiencing rising rates of bias, harassment, discrimination, and hate-fueled violence.
