US Strikes in Iran Spark Calls for Enhanced War Powers Legislation

US Lawmakers Condemn Iran Strikes Over Lack of Congressional Approval

Democratic lawmakers have expressed strong opposition to the US strikes on Iran, citing a lack of congressional approval. The attacks, authorized by President Donald Trump, were carried out without prior authorization from Congress.

Senator Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees, has called for the Senate to immediately vote on legislation that would block the president’s ability to take further military action without congressional approval. Kaine described the strikes as “a colossal mistake” and emphasized the need for the Senate to act swiftly.

House of Representatives Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries echoed Kaine’s concerns, stating that House Democrats are committed to forcing a floor vote on a measure to restrict Trump’s war powers regarding Iran. The push for legislative checks on executive power has gained significant bipartisan momentum in the Senate, with some Republican lawmakers joining the effort.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer demanded an immediate briefing from the administration about the Iran attacks, including classified information and public testimony. Senator Mark Warner described the strikes as “a deeply consequential decision” that risks pulling the US into another conflict in the Middle East.

A growing number of Republican lawmakers have also expressed opposition to the strikes, with some co-sponsoring legislation to curb executive military authority. Representative Thomas Massie stated that the strikes were “acts of war unauthorised by Congress,” while Senator Rand Paul cited constitutional principles as the basis for his opposition.
