US Supreme Court Upholds California’s Redistricting Measure
The US Supreme Court has ruled in favor of a California redistricting measure aimed at increasing Democratic representation in Congress, rejecting a challenge from the state Republican Party. The court’s decision, announced on Wednesday, consisted of a single sentence stating that the Republican application “is denied.”
In December, the Supreme Court allowed a similar redistricting measure in Texas to move forward, which was designed to benefit Republicans. California Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta have welcomed the decision, citing President Donald Trump’s efforts to redraw congressional districts in his party’s favor.
Trump had led a nationwide push to redraw districts, with reports emerging that he personally called Texas state politicians to revise their congressional maps. In response, California launched a ballot initiative, Proposition 50, aimed at increasing Democratic representation by five seats. The measure was passed overwhelmingly by voters in November and temporarily suspended the work of an independent redistricting commission.
The new map approved under Proposition 50 will only be in place through the 2030 election, with Newsom pledging to repeal it if Republicans in Texas do the same with their new map. The push for partisan gerrymandering has faced bipartisan criticism as an attack on democratic values.
In a statement, Newsom noted that Trump had previously stated he was “entitled” to five more Congressional seats in Texas. Bonta echoed this sentiment, blaming Trump for launching a redistricting arms race that threatened to disenfranchise Democratic voters. The Supreme Court’s decision marks a win for Democratic efforts to counter the Trump-led redistricting efforts.
The court’s ruling does not address concerns about partisan gerrymandering, which is not necessarily illegal unless it purposefully disenfranchises voters on the basis of their race.
