US to Challenge Chinas Dominance in Critical Minerals Market

US Stockpiles Critical Minerals, Forms Trade Bloc to Counter China’s Influence

The United States has begun stockpiling critical minerals, a move similar to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve established in response to the 1970s oil crisis. The effort is part of a broader strategy to diversify its supply chains and reduce dependence on Chinese sources.

In the 1980s, Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping predicted that China would become a dominant supplier of rare earth elements, which are used in clean energy technologies and other modern applications. Today, China remains the primary source of these critical minerals, sparking concerns among other nations about their reliance on Beijing’s supply chains.

The US government has allocated $12 billion to stockpile critical minerals, with plans to establish a trading bloc with its allies to promote collective pricing and diversify supply chains. This initiative aims to reduce the country’s dependence on Chinese sources and build alternative trade relationships.

Similar efforts are underway by other nations seeking to counter China’s influence in global supply chains. The US proposal is part of a growing trend towards diversification and cooperation among countries concerned about the concentration of critical mineral supplies in Beijing.
