US to push for Israeli de-escalation before new peace negotiations

US to Host Lebanese and Israeli Delegations for Talks

A delegation-level meeting between Lebanon and Israel is set to take place in Washington, DC, on May 17, according to a Lebanese official who spoke to Al Jazeera Arabic on condition of anonymity. The talks aim to address security and political issues related to a full Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, borders, prisoners, displaced people, and reconstruction.

The meeting follows an initial round of negotiations between the two sides in Washington, DC, in mid-April, which led to the current ceasefire agreement. However, attacks continue, prompting efforts by the US to de-escalate tensions.

According to the official, the talks will focus on resolving issues related to a full Israeli withdrawal and reconstruction efforts. The Lebanese presidency has been seeking to discuss a final cessation of hostilities with Israel.

The expected step before May 17 is an extension of the truce and an Israeli commitment to a ceasefire. However, Lebanon is not moving towards signing a peace agreement but rather pursuing a nonaggression pact.

The US-Iran truce in the wider war in the Middle East has led to a reduction in hostilities, with the Beirut area experiencing a lull in attacks before Wednesday’s incident. The Lebanese official stated that the recent attack on southern suburbs was intended to obstruct the negotiation process.

Since the ceasefire agreement came into effect, Israel and Hezbollah have traded accusations of violating the truce in other areas, particularly in southern Lebanon. The conflict has resulted in over 2,700 deaths and more than 1.2 million people displaced since March 2.
