Iraq Launches Investigations into Detainees from Syria
A trilateral agreement between Iraq, the Syrian government, and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has led to the relocation of ISIL detainees from northeastern Syria to Iraqi custody. The transfer of a third group of detainees by US forces on Saturday is part of this arrangement.
According to CENTCOM, a broader operation to move detainees from facilities across the region is underway, with approximately 7,000 prisoners expected to be transferred in total. Iraq has initiated investigations into ISIL detainees from Syria over alleged atrocities committed against its citizens.
Security developments in northeastern Syria have accelerated recently, following government forces’ sweep through the north and SDF retreats. A meeting between SDF governor-designate Nour Eddien Ahmad and a Damascus delegation at the Hasakah government building took place on Saturday, which carries significant political implications.
The agreement allows the SDF to nominate the governor of Hasakah, with Ahmad expected to be formally appointed by the Syrian government. The visiting delegation includes senior government security officials, highlighting Damascus’s expanding administrative control in the province.
US forces have vacated most watchtowers surrounding a military installation in the al-Shaddadi area of Hasakah province, leaving only the western tower staffed. Equipment used to manage aircraft take-offs and landings at the base’s airstrip was also removed. The US has maintained a presence in Syria since October 2015, with troop levels fluctuating over time.
The relocation of ISIL detainees is part of ongoing efforts by the international coalition fighting the group. US forces continue to focus on countering ISIL remnants, supporting the Syrian government, providing intelligence and logistical assistance, and securing oil and gas infrastructure in Hasakah and Deir Az Zor provinces.
