US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Announces Plans for New $250 Banknote Featuring President Trump’s Face
A new design for a $250 banknote featuring President Donald Trump’s face is being prepared, according to US Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent. The Treasury Department has been working on the design in anticipation of proposed legislation that would allow current and former presidents to be featured on US currency.
The proposed law, which is currently before lawmakers, aims to change a requirement that bars living people from appearing on US currency. If passed, the new banknote would mark the first time a living person has been featured on US currency in over 100 years.
A mock-up of the design obtained by The Washington Post shows the words “America 250 anniversary” and features President Trump’s portrait. The Treasury Department is expected to decide whether the bill will be put into circulation, pending approval from lawmakers.
This would not be the first time a sitting president has appeared on US currency. As part of plans to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, President Trump’s signature is set to appear on US currency. Additionally, his portrait has been featured on various federal buildings and other government facilities.
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing will be responsible for printing the new banknote, which would be a significant change to the design of US currency.
