USMNT 2026 World Cup Roster Announced by Pochettino

US National Team Coach Mauricio Pochettino Expresses Optimism for 2026 World Cup

Coach Mauricio Pochettino, leading the US national team, stated that his side could win the 2026 World Cup on home soil. During a presentation of the team roster in New York, Pochettino and former US defender Alexi Lalas said “Why not us?” implying the US has a realistic chance of winning the tournament.

Pochettino also emphasized the importance of dreaming big, saying “American people, it’s always about to do the impossible.” The coach expressed his team’s potential for success in the upcoming World Cup.

The US national team will prepare at its new training facility in Fayetteville, Georgia, which has been funded by Arthur Blank, owner of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United. The state-of-the-art setup is designed to support high-performing teams.

In terms of their chances of advancing in the tournament, the US team faces a favorable group in Group D, ahead of Australia, Paraguay, and Turkey. A win in this group would put them in position for a Round of 32 matchup against a lower-seeded opponent.

However, getting to the quarterfinals would require winning four games, which is a challenging task. The US team has only won three games in the World Cup since 2002, with their most recent victories coming in 1930 and 2002.

The key to advancement for the US team will be avoiding European opponents, as they have struggled against UEFA teams in the past. A win in Group D would put them on a path to the Round of 16, where they could reasonably start talking about quarterfinals.

Goalkeepers Matt Freese and Matt Turner were among those named to the roster, with Freese having previously played for Manchester United as a teenager.
