Vance defends Iran deal as Switzerland trips cancelled on war day 112

US Vice President Delays Trip to Switzerland Amid Iran Peace Talks

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the US and Iran has been signed, paving the way for a 60-day negotiating period towards a final deal. According to the White House, US Vice President JD Vance had planned to travel to Switzerland to participate in new peace talks with Iranian officials.

However, following an Israeli bombing in southern Lebanon that killed at least three people overnight, Vance’s trip was cancelled at the last minute. The incident occurred on Thursday night, prompting a change of plans.

Iranian officials have stated that they will not confirm whether they will travel for talks until signs are seen that the interim agreement is being implemented. This agreement includes Lebanon in the US-Iran ceasefire and has been presented as a step towards ending months of conflict between the two countries.

The MoU was signed by the presidents of both nations, but critics have raised questions about its terms, the number of unanswered questions it leaves, and Tehran’s commitment to it. Vance had previously defended the agreement, stating that its signing marks the beginning of the negotiating period.
