Venezuelan President Rodriguez to Meet with Colombian President Petro Soon

Venezuela’s Interim President Meets with Colombian Counterpart

Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, announced that she and Colombian President Gustavo Petro have agreed to hold a bilateral meeting to discuss security issues, economic matters, and energy cooperation. The meeting is expected to take place in the border city of Cucuta.

According to Petro, he had invited Rodriguez to meet in Cucuta to discuss energy cooperation and infrastructure projects. No further details on the timing of the meeting were provided.

The two leaders have agreed to promote a relationship based on mutual respect and joint work between their countries. They also expressed commitment to advancing key issues on the economic, energy, and security agenda.

This announcement comes as Venezuela adjusts to its new government following the removal of former leader Nicolas Maduro. The Venezuelan Supreme Court appointed Rodriguez as acting president in January, with support from both the military and the governing party, as well as the US.

Rodriguez has overseen reforms, including a new law that opens Venezuela’s nationalized oil sector to foreign investment. The US has begun easing some sanctions to facilitate oil production under the new administration.

The meeting between Rodriguez and Petro is seen as part of a renewed period of international diplomacy for Venezuela, which has been isolated by US sanctions. Top US military officials have also visited Venezuela in recent days, including General Francis Donovan and Pentagon leader Joseph Humire.

Colombia and Venezuela share a border that stretches over 2,200 kilometers, shaping their often fragile relationship. The two countries have grown more complex ties amid the arrival of nearly three million Venezuelan migrants and refugees in Colombia.
