Workers Gather for International Labour Day Rallies Nationwide

Global Labour Day Marches Take Place Amid Economic Uncertainty

Workers from around the world are gathering in cities to mark International Labour Day, with many events taking place on May 1, a public holiday in some countries. The demonstrations come as concerns about the global economy and rising energy prices grow.

Trade unions are calling for solidarity and the protection of workers’ rights, citing the impact of the US-Israeli war on Iran and increasing energy costs. In Europe, the European Trade Union Confederation is emphasizing the need for collective action to address these issues.

In various countries, including Indonesia, Argentina, and Chile, workers are protesting over issues such as fuel prices, wages, and job security. The Philippine SENTRO umbrella group of workers’ groups has linked the local situation to global economic concerns.

Labour Day rallies attract large crowds due to the holiday’s status in many countries. In France, workers’ unions have called for protests under the slogan “bread, peace and freedom.” Meanwhile, in Gaza, Palestinian workers have cancelled May Day events due to the ongoing economic crisis caused by Israel’s conflict with Palestine.

The International Trade Union Confederation has reported that CEOs of major corporations received significant pay and bonuses last year, while many workers face potential job cuts. Workers’ rights coalitions are advocating for higher taxes on the wealthy and limits on executive pay.

Labour Day events have been taking place globally since the 1880s in the US, when workers protested for an eight-hour workday. This year’s demonstrations feature a wide range of slogans, including “workers over billionaires” and “bread, peace and freedom.”
