FIFA World Cup 2026 to Feature Advanced Technology
The upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to be one of the most technologically advanced in the tournament’s history. The event will feature a range of innovative technologies aimed at enhancing the match-viewing experience for fans and improving the sport for players.
One notable innovation is the official match ball, “Trionda,” which features an inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor chip that captures data 500 times per second. This technology provides precise information on the ball’s movement, allowing officials to make more accurate decisions in real-time, including in relation to offside incidents.
In addition to the match balls, players will also be part of the technological innovations. A partnership between FIFA and Lenovo has unveiled AI-enabled 3D player avatars, which use digital scanning to create precise 3D models of each player. These models allow for more accurate tracking of players during fast or obstructed movements.
Referee body cameras will also be used at all 104 matches, providing fans with a view of the field of play as if they were present on the pitch themselves. Furthermore, robotic dogs designed to enter dangerous areas and broadcast live video back to security forces will be deployed in case of any altercation.
FIFA has also introduced an advanced semi-automated offside technology, which enables officials to make quicker decisions than waiting for a move to play out. The revamped version can now signal when a player is more than 10cm offside, providing officials with real-time audio alerts directly to their earpiece.
The use of these technologies aims to improve the overall experience for fans and players alike, while also enhancing match officials’ decision-making.
