Youngest F1 Driver Kimi Antonelli Secures Grand Prix Pole Position

Italian Teenager Sets Record as Youngest Pole Sitter in Formula One History

Kimi Antonelli, a 19-year-old Italian driver, has broken an 18-year-old record by becoming the youngest pole sitter in Formula One history. The achievement was made possible by his performance at the Shanghai International Circuit in China.

Antonelli took pole position for the full Grand Prix on Saturday, surpassing the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel, who set it at the age of 21 and 72 days in 2008. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton praised Antonelli’s achievement, stating that “it’s going to take a while for someone to ever get close to that one.”

Antonelli joined Mercedes as a rookie alongside George Russell, the current championship leader, after Hamilton moved to Ferrari. Pundits questioned whether the young Italian could live up to Hamilton’s legacy, but team boss Toto Wolff consistently touted Antonelli as a top-tier talent.

Hamilton expressed his admiration for Antonelli, saying “he took my seat! And he hit it hard from the get-go, so it’s really great to see him progressing and he really deserves it.” The Italian driver was also praised by Hamilton for his performance, stating that “it’s just the beginning” after setting a new record.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said that Antonelli had done well despite some criticism about his age. He added that Russell’s battery issue at the start of the final phase hindered his chances of taking pole. The Grand Prix will be held over 56 laps of the Shanghai International Circuit on Sunday.
