Al Jazeera Media Network Director General Announces Initiative to Re-evaluate Journalism’s Role in Digital Age
At the Web Summit Qatar 2026, Sheikh Nasser bin Faisal Al Thani unveiled the “Core Project”, a comprehensive initiative aimed at re-examining journalism’s role and purpose in the digital era. The project seeks to combine technology with ethical and professional responsibility to provide context and responsible reporting.
Sheikh Nasser emphasized that algorithmic systems, attention-based economic models, and instant interaction have contributed to new forms of polarization, deepening division instead of fostering dialogue. He noted that journalism is not an alternative to technology, but rather a valuable force capable of adding context to events and revealing human stories behind the news.
The initiative aims to automate repetitive tasks to free up journalists for high-value analysis, guided by three principles: “The Now”, “Meaning or Context”, and “People”. The goal is to provide meaning by linking events to their root causes, rather than solely focusing on speed and accuracy. Sheikh Nasser also redefined the audience as “conscious actors” capable of engaging responsibly with the world.
Sheikh Nasser called for a partnership between responsible journalism and ethical technology, urging tech leaders and innovators to align their efforts to bridge divides and empower a more informed public. The initiative is part of Al Jazeera’s broader effort to review its role and responsibility in the digital age.
