Alyssa Healy Announces Retirement from Australian Cricket
Australian wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy has announced that she will retire from international cricket after the upcoming multi-format series against India in March. The 35-year-old, who has been a mainstay of Australia’s dominant women’s cricket team for 15 years and its current captain, made the statement on Tuesday.
Healy, who has played her last T20 international match, will compete in three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and one Test against India. She has scored 3,563 runs with seven centuries in ODIs and 3,054 runs with a single hundred in Twenty20s for Australia, as well as making 275 dismissals behind the stumps.
Healy’s decision to retire comes after she had already announced her retirement from T20 internationals. She took over as full-time Australian captain in 2023, leading the side to a historic 16-0 whitewash of England.
Tributes have poured in for Healy from cricket officials and fans alike. Cricket Australia chief Todd Greenberg described her as “one of the all-time greats of the game” who has made an immeasurable contribution to women’s cricket. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also paid tribute, calling her a “true legend of Australian cricket”.
Healy’s retirement marks the end of an era for Australian women’s cricket, which has seen significant growth during her 15-year career.
