Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to Unveil Economic Agenda in First Major Policy Speech
Andy Burnham, the frontrunner to become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, is set to deliver his first major policy speech since Keir Starmer’s resignation last week. The address at a museum in Manchester will outline Burnham’s economic agenda and position him as a candidate for the top job.
Burnham has been declared as the only candidate to replace Starmer, who announced his resignation two years after winning a large Labour majority. If no other challengers emerge, Burnham could take office by mid-July. His speech is expected to focus on devolving power to regions and local communities, with a 10-year mission to raise living standards through reindustrialisation, housing, infrastructure, and reform of utilities.
According to Labour Deputy Leader Lucy Powell, Burnham aims to empower communities across the UK to take control of their own agendas. Burnham’s economic approach is described as “Manchesterism,” a business-friendly socialism that opposes trickle-down economics and neoliberalism. He has expressed support for greater public control over transport, water, and energy, as well as cuts to business rates for pubs and music venues.
Burnham’s leadership style and potential finance minister will be closely watched by markets and observers. The UK economy is currently facing fiscal pressures due to the impact of the war in Ukraine and the US-Israel war on Iran. As a result, Burnham’s ability to manage the economy will be crucial if he takes office.
