BNP secures majority in Bangladesh general election

Bangladesh Nationalist Party Secures Landslide Victory in Parliamentary Election

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has emerged as the clear winner in the country’s parliamentary election, according to results published by the Bangladesh Election Commission on Saturday. The party’s leader, Tarique Rahman, is expected to become the prime minister.

The BNP won a significant majority of seats, with local news reports indicating that the party’s victory was “overwhelming”. However, no official announcement has been made regarding the outcome of the election.

In a statement, Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh’s interim leader, congratulated Rahman on his party’s victory. Yunus, who has led the country as its “chief adviser” since an August 2024 uprising, stated that Rahman would help guide the country towards stability, inclusiveness, and development.

The opposition Jamaat-e-Islami party also issued a statement, acknowledging the overall outcome of the election despite having raised concerns about the vote count. The party’s chief, Shafiqur Rahman, said in a statement that they recognized the overall outcome and respected the rule of law.

The results of the parliamentary election will be officially confirmed once an announcement is made by the Bangladesh Election Commission.
