Canadas Herdman hired as new Indonesia national team head coach

Former Canada Coach John Herdman Appointed as New Indonesia National Team Head

Indonesia has appointed former Canada men’s national team coach John Herdman as its new head coach, replacing Patrick Kluivert who departed the role in October. The 50-year-old Herdman will lead the team for a two-year contract with an option for two additional years.

Herdman’s appointment comes after Indonesia failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to the Indonesian Football Federation, he is described as “not just a coach, but a football architect” with a strong track record of taking teams to major international tournaments.

Prior to his appointment, Herdman led Canada to the 2022 World Cup and previously coached the women’s team to victory at the 2015 Women’s World Cup. He also received a written admonishment following a disciplinary hearing in Canada due to a drone-spying scandal during the Paris Olympics.

Herdman left his position as head coach of MLS team Toronto FC in 2024. His first task will be to prepare Indonesia for the 2027 Asian Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia.
