FIFA World Cup 2026 Set to Begin Next Week
The 96-year history of the FIFA World Cup is about to be marked by a significant milestone as the tournament kicks off next week in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The month-long event will feature 48 teams competing in 104 matches across 16 cities, with stadiums located in the eastern, western, and central regions of North America.
For the first time in World Cup history, the tournament will be played across three countries, a departure from the traditional single-host nation format. This year’s edition is expected to be the biggest and most diverse so far, with nations from UEFA having the most direct slots, followed by CAF and AFC.
The 2026 World Cup will also introduce an extra phase, with teams that make it past the group stage competing in a round of 32 clash. The tournament winners this year will have to go through eight games en route to title victory, one more than the seven games Argentina won to lift the World Cup in Qatar four years ago.
The event has already generated significant buzz, with fans eagerly anticipating the final match at MetLife Stadium in New York City. The half-time show is expected to feature a pop party inspired by the NFL’s Super Bowl, with K-pop supergroup BTS, Madonna, and Colombian star Shakira set to perform.
Jerseys from sportswear giant Adidas have been particularly popular among fans, thanks to their unique designs. FIFA has also announced a new pre-game ceremony, which will include extra-large country flag banners and players lining up around the centre circle before the national anthems are played. The ceremony is designed to transform the stadium into a shared stage, with players entering the pitch through a dedicated arch closest to the tunnel.
