Chinas actions in Iran suggest shifting regional priorities

US and Israel Launch Operation Epic Fury on Iran; China’s Response Reveals Shift in Priorities

On February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury, a military operation aimed at Iran. The operation resulted in significant damage to Iranian infrastructure and high-ranking officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Iran responded with attacks on US military installations and diplomatic missions in the Middle East and Israel using drones and missiles. Despite these retaliatory measures, the Iranian government endured, and further attacks continued.

China’s response to the operation was notable for its muted tone. Two days after the attack, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that “might does not make right” and warned against the use of force. However, China did not explicitly condemn the US-Israeli assault or provide significant assistance to Iran beyond rhetorical support.

In fact, China’s priorities appeared to be focused on maintaining stability in the region, rather than intervening directly on behalf of Iran. When Iran attempted to provoke international intervention by closing the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime corridor for Chinese oil imports, Beijing called for all parties to cease hostilities and return to negotiations.

This approach was consistent with China’s stated priorities, which include maintaining stability in the region and promoting its own interests. In a phone call with US President Donald Trump just one month prior, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of Taiwan to China-US relations, drawing a clear red line against Taiwanese independence.

The implications of this response are significant, as they suggest that even close allies may be expendable when core interests are at stake. The situation highlights the complexities of international relations and the need for careful consideration of priorities in times of crisis.
