Criminal Investigation Launched in Switzerland Over Deadly Ski Resort Bar Fire

Investigation Launched in Switzerland Following Deadly Bar Fire

Prosecutors in Valais, Switzerland have launched a criminal investigation into the managers of Le Constellation, a bar in Crans-Montana that was at the center of a devastating fire on New Year’s Eve. The incident resulted in the deaths of at least 40 people and injuries to 119 others.

The two managers, who are believed to be from France, are suspected of various offenses including homicide by negligence, causing bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence. They have already been questioned along with other individuals involved in the tragedy.

According to officials, temperatures during the blaze reached as high as 500-600 degrees Celsius (900-1,100 Fahrenheit). The fire is believed to have started due to sparklers getting too close to the ceiling, leading to a rapid and widespread blaze.

The investigation will focus on various aspects, including the number of people allowed into the bar, accessible emergency exits, and materials used during renovations. Swiss President Guy Parmelin has described the incident as “one of the worst tragedies” experienced by the country.

Many of the victims are teenagers, with survivors being transferred to local hospitals for treatment. The Italian ambassador to Switzerland reported that the identification process could be completed by Sunday afternoon. The bodies of several confirmed deceased have been returned to their families.
