Gaza’s Infrastructure Under Siege: A Year of Devastation
Over the past year, Gaza’s infrastructure has faced unprecedented challenges. The territory’s systems, including electricity networks, water systems, hospitals, roads, and municipal services, have been severely damaged or destroyed, leaving daily life a struggle for survival.
Electricity generation has been significantly impacted, with the only power plant shut down due to fuel shortages. As a result, nearly 80% of power transmission lines have been destroyed, affecting families’ ability to access basic necessities like lighting and communication.
Access to clean water has also deteriorated sharply, with Israel’s bombardment damaging wells, desalination plants, and pumping stations. This has led to long queues for water trucks, which often arrive empty or with limited supplies. Families are forced to rely on contaminated water, leading to increased rates of stomach infections and other health issues.
Hospitals, once struggling to cope with the territory’s population needs, now operate in crisis mode due to severe shortages of medicine, equipment, electricity, and staff. Medical facilities have been damaged or forced out of service entirely, leaving patients without access to life-saving care.
The destruction of roads, public facilities, and municipal infrastructure has further exacerbated the situation, leading to slow ambulances and aid delivery. Rubbish collection has ceased, contributing to the spread of disease. The territory’s telecommunications infrastructure has also been repeatedly knocked out, isolating families and cutting them off from emergency services and the outside world.
The cumulative effect of Israel’s military actions on Gaza’s infrastructure is evident in the territory’s current state of devastation.
