German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed concerns that the United States is facing a similar situation to its conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, warning that Washington lacks a clear path out of the conflict with Iran. Speaking at a gathering in Marsberg on Monday, Merz stated that the US must also find a way to exit the conflict, citing past military experiences as an example.
Merz noted that Iranian officials have been negotiating “very skilfully” and appear to be gaining the upper hand, particularly through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He emphasized the need for a rapid end to the war, stating that it is already having a significant impact on Germany’s economy.
The German leader also mentioned that Berlin is prepared to deploy minesweepers to secure shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, but stressed that this would only be considered if hostilities cease. Merz’s comments come as concerns about the conflict’s wider implications are growing across Europe, including energy disruptions and economic instability.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has also warned about the ongoing nuclear threats to European security, emphasizing the need for a credible deterrent. France and Germany have recently strengthened their cooperation on nuclear deterrence in response to regional instability and the Iran war.
