Hungarian authorities sentence German activist to eight-year prison term

Hungarian Court Jails German Anti-Fascist Activist for 8 Years

A Hungarian court has sentenced a German anti-fascist activist, Maja T, to eight years in prison for her involvement in violence at a far-right rally in Budapest. The annual “Day of Honour” event, which commemorates the failed attempt by Nazi and allied Hungarian soldiers to break out of Budapest during the Red Army’s siege of the city in 1945, drew participants from across Europe.

Maja T was part of a group that attacked nine people, including German and Polish citizens, who were identified as far-right extremists. The victims suffered broken bones and head injuries. Maja T was extradited from Germany to Hungary in December 2024 and was convicted of attempted aggravated bodily harm causing life-threatening injuries and assault committed as part of a criminal organisation.

The defendant’s father, Wolfram Jarosch, expressed concerns about the trial, stating that it was a “political show trial.” The conviction can be appealed. Prosecutors stated that Maja T was one of 19 members of a multinational far-left group that travelled to Hungary and carried out the attack.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has previously designated anti-fascist groups linked to the attacks as “terrorist” organisations. The court’s decision has been welcomed by Orban’s spokesman, Zoltan Kovacs, who referred to Maja T as an “antifa terrorist.” However, supporters of the activist have raised concerns about detention conditions and the fairness of the trial in Hungary.

The case highlights the complexities of extradition proceedings and the challenges faced by individuals accused of crimes in different countries.
