US-Iran Talks Begin with Focus on Ending Hostilities
A proposal by the United States has been sent to Iran, which includes a 14-point plan for ending the conflict between the two nations. According to reports, Pakistan has acted as a mediator in delivering Iran’s response to the US proposal.
The proposed plan outlines three key stages of negotiations: first, to end hostilities; second, to address maritime security concerns in the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz; and third, to discuss other issues related to the conflict. Iranian officials have emphasized the importance of ensuring “maritime security” in their response to the US proposal.
The US had previously sent a 14-point proposal to Iran, which includes conditions such as not developing a nuclear weapon, stopping uranium enrichment for at least 12 years, and handing over an estimated 440kg of enriched uranium. In return, the US would lift sanctions, release frozen assets, and halt its naval blockade of Iranian ports.
Pakistan has confirmed receipt of Iran’s response to the US proposal. Diplomatic sources indicate that there is a sense of urgency to reach a deal, as the prolonged blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is having a significant impact on the global economy, particularly in Pakistan.
