Iran Protests Spark Global Concern Over US Military Threats Against Tehran

Global Leaders React to Ongoing Protests in Iran

Protests in Iran since late December have sparked differing reactions from global leaders. The US and its allies have expressed support for the protesters, while some governments have raised concerns about potential foreign involvement.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that the country is not seeking war but is prepared to respond to any threats. He also distinguished between those protesting due to economic hardship and those seeking to “sow discord.” US President Donald Trump has warned Iran’s leaders against using lethal force, stating that the US is considering military action.

Israel has strongly backed the protesters, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commending their “tremendous heroism.” The Israeli army has also stated its readiness to respond if necessary. A minister from Israel refused to rule out backing military action, saying there were “lots of ifs.”

The EU has proposed new sanctions in response to the protests. The UK, Germany, and France have issued a joint statement condemning the killing of protesters. Germany’s chancellor, Friedrich Merz, predicted that Iran’s Islamic republic is nearing its end.

China has taken a stance closer to Iran’s, opposing external interference in the country’s internal affairs. Russia’s Security Council secretary, Sergei Shoigu, condemned foreign forces’ attempts to interfere in Iran’s internal affairs. Turkiye’s foreign minister, Hakan Firat, has also expressed opposition to external involvement.

The number of security personnel and protesters killed remains unclear, with conflicting reports from Iranian authorities and opposition activists. The situation continues to unfold as global leaders weigh their responses.
