Iran’s Supreme Leader Accuses US of Seeking to Seize Country’s Resources
In a statement on Sunday, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei warned the United States that any attack on his country would result in a “regional war.” The warning came as the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and its accompanying naval forces approached the region. Khamenei made the comments during a commemoration of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s return to Iran in 1979, a pivotal moment that led to the Iranian Revolution.
Khamenei stated that the US should be aware that any military action would lead to a regional conflict. He also accused the US of seeking to seize Iran’s oil and natural gas resources, describing this as the main reason for their hostility towards the country. The supreme leader emphasized that the US’s claims about human rights are “empty talk.”
The comments come amid ongoing tensions between Iran and the US, which have been exacerbated by nationwide protests in Iran that began in late December. The protests, which started over economic issues but later turned into a challenge to Khamenei’s rule, resulted in the deaths of thousands of people, according to Iranian authorities and US-based rights activists.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to attack Iran, although he has also stated that he wants to engage in talks with Tehran. In recent days, both countries have confirmed that they are seeking to establish communication channels to avoid a military confrontation.
